Jim B. Butterworth - District 1 County Commissioner

Fellow Habersham Countians:

My name is Jim B. Butterworth and I want to represent you as the District 1 County Commissioner for the 2005-2009 term.

My wife Amy and I grew up in Habersham County, we have
decided to raise our children here, and we now feel it's time to start giving back to the county and its people.

I am a 1984 graduate of Habersham Central High School and I graduated from the University of Georgia in 1988 with a Bachelor's degree in Political Science. After college, I entered the United States Air Force as a Second Lieutenant. Upon graduation from Undergraduate Pilot Training, I was assigned as an Instructor Pilot flying the T-38 aircraft in Columbus, MS. In addition to flying the T-38, I also flew the C-5A/B aircraft around the world while based at Dover AFB, Delaware. I most recently flew in the military as a combat qualified Aircraft Commander and formation flight leader in the B-1b Bomber with the Georgia Air National Guard at Robbins AFB, Georgia. All total, I served 12 years as an Air Force Officer and pilot.

During my time in the Air Force I learned to think on the move. Timely decisions are a necessity in the cockpit. In addition to flying, however, the Air Force requires its officers to perform many additional duties. For me these duties included managing personnel, budgets, time and equipment. Back then I couldn't wait to get away from a desk and go flying but now I feel very fortunate to have had the varied experiences I did in the Air Force.

I am currently employed by Delta Air Lines as a pilot. While working for Delta I have flown the 727, 757, 767 and the MD-88. As a way of staying involved in the community over the past 10 years, I have written regularly for The Northeast Georgian. I have also served on the Habersham County Planning Commission.

I have a desire to help bring a new level of decorum to the operation of our local government. Creating a good strategic plan for the future is imperative for the prosperity of our county. The plan should address the specific challenges of water, roads, growth and public services. County leadership needs to reassure taxpayers that its government will be good stewards of each dollar the county brings in and that taxes will be reduced at the first possible opportunity.

I realize the job of Commissioner is a very challenging role. I also realize that public service is a responsibility that our country's founding fathers have required us to accept. Given these considerations I look forward to the opportunities that lie ahead as a candidate and as a commissioner.

My wife, Amy (Waldon), and I have two children, Blake, 5 and Claire, 3. We are active members of Bethlehem Baptist Church and we invite you to come worship with us.
