Nancy Schaefer for Senate 50th District


Nancy Schaefer of Habersham County (Clarkesville, Ga.) has officially declared her candidacy for the 50th Senate District Seat. Schaefer, who has for many years been a strong voice for the family and active in the Republican Party, qualified at the state capitol Tuesday, April 27, 2004.

Serving as a trustee for Toccoa Falls College, Schaefer told her radio commentary listening audience good-bye for a while and that, “You know my heart. You know my burning desire to do everything in my power to protect freedom and liberty for our children, our grandchildren, and for the next generation.” Continuing she said, “I believe those of us who uphold the U.S. Constitution, free enterprise, less government, lower taxes, the 2nd Amendment, more individual responsibility, the Ten Commandments, the sanctity of life, and the traditional family must be involved in strengthening our society and our culture on any level available to us.”

Schaefer was the Republican Nominee for Lieutenant Governor in 1994 and the first woman candidate for Governor of Georgia in 1998. She is president and founder of Family Concerns, Inc. and Citizens for Public Awareness, Inc., is Vice Chairman of the Habersham Republican Party, and represented the Southern Baptist Convention as a conservative lobbyist at several United Nations Conferences including those in Beijing, China; Rome, Italy; Istanbul, Turkey; and New York. Schaefer has served on numerous advisory boards and hails from a family of public servants. Her father, Lamar Smith, served as the Superior Court Judge of the Mountain Judicial Circuit.

Schaefer was born in Rabun County and graduated from High School in Stephens County. She married Bruce Schaefer of Toccoa, Ga., the son of Dr. and Mrs. Bruce Schaefer. The Schaefers reside in Habersham County. They have five children and thirteen grandchildren. Their fourth son, Edward, is the executive director of the Athens Y Camps for boys and girls in Tallulah Falls, Ga. He also owns a business with his brother Josh in Toccoa, Ga. Nancy and Paul Almoyan, their daughter and son-in-law, are the proprietors of Isabelle’s Restaurant in Tallulah Falls, Ga. Other sons, Bruce and John, reside in Atlanta and South Carolina.

The counties Nancy Schaefer will serve if she is successful in her bid for the new 50th Senate Seat are Towns, Rabun, Habersham, Stephens, Banks, Franklin, Hart, and a portion of White County.
